Make a Difference Competition

The Make a Difference competition is about images capturing people, groups or organisations making a difference in our community.

We not only want to reward the photography, but raise awareness and funds for the subjects.

We plan on holding an exhibition in December at which the work will be for sale and proceeds will go to the subjects

More info available from this link.

Next meeting

A big" thank you" to Judy for organising a night photography and for her technical support. Also Phil Glowacki for his astronomical knowledge and technical support. Everyone had a good time and everyone came away with a successful image. The only reason the evening finished was because it got uncomfortably cold!
The next meeting of the club will be Wednesday 14th at 7.00pm in the RSL hall.

Geoff Leslie will give a presentation on BIRDS.

Please bring your capture an idea print on GAP

Please send your homework "Pet" photograph to Alan Cole
The Capture an Idea photo print for OCTOBER will be WEEDS.

Monday 5 September 2016

Night photography

Remember tomorrow night – Tuesday 6th – 7.00pm at the RSL meet for night photography with Judy Hoffman.
Rug up- bring tripod, cable release and torch.

VAPS Annual General Meeting. 8 November 2016

Detals have been sent to clubs.

Message from the Newsbrief Editor
Spring is on its way. That is excellent for all of us. Does it make you more active in getting out and about? It does me and I am glad.

Have you ever entered an international photographic competition?
Here is a link to start with. Photographic Society of Sri Lanka.

The APS has started a new Facebook Closed Group called, "Friends of the Australian Photographic Society".

The group is about sharing all things photographic. Members are encouraged to actively engage by like-ing and commenting on posts by other members.

It has friendly discussion, requests for advice, talk about gear and  links to photographically relevant articles.

It encourages people to arrange informal photography meetups anywhere in the world.

Modifications to advertising charges.
There have been some modifications to these charges. See the bottom of the email.

Question!

Are you an aesthetic person who got into photography or are you a photographer who has become a bit aesthetic?
Now that I am retired I seem to have time to think about things like this. Or is it that there is more in the "stockpile" to think about? Or is it that work no longer blocks those good thoughts? I seem to be visiting galleries and exhibitions more lately. Why is it so?

This has brought me back to a photograph that has been on my wall for fifty years. It was taken by a friend at Narrowing Beach near Portland in Western Victoria in the late 60's. It's faded a bit and always seems to have cobwebs.

At the time, aged 21, I had my first camera (Minolta SRT 101) and was developing my own images in the bathroom. This image so typifies my life as a teenager. Get a few friends, get your bikes and head off to the cliffs or bays around Portland. Tell no one where we are going and just get back for tea at 5.00 pm. It's an example of engaging with the content and feeling an image has that, I am sure, we have all experienced.

Recently I have been looking at my recent images, many of which are beach and sea locations. A fair proportion of them seem influenced by my wall image. Foreground in focus and background a mystery.

It's this image and my recent ones that have answered, in part, the question at the start. I think that the aesthetic side of me was "loitering with intent" and photography has enabled me to explore this more. So where am I? I reckon I am about halfway between the two extremes.

So thank you photography and thank you Howard Birnstihl for the photograph on my wall for fifty years.

What about you? What were you when you started photography? What are you now? Have you talked about this with other photographic friends. Have you shared your thoughts about your favourite image with a friend or by an article?

Does your club/society engage you in aesthetics as well as techniques, processing, rules and the like?

On the above matter, Waverley Camera Club have interesting article on their website. What an extensive set of ideas are in this article!

TULIPS DOWN UNDER COMPETITION - INSTRUCTIONS

VAPS has partnered with Tesselaar Tulip Farm to bring you an exciting digital competition. See the flyer in this Newsbrief for the details.

This will be a Club entry, not individual members. Members will need to lodge their best digital images taken at the Tulip Festival during 8th September and 4th October with their clubs, and clubs will need to select the top 10 entries.

Clubs will then need to load their digital entries up to the VAPS Competition website, vapscomp.org.au,  just as you did for the Interclub.

If your Competition Steward has lost the current club login to the VAPS system or you need a new one please request a new password or use the Contacts tab to contact us.

Digital images for the competition must have been taken between 8th September and 4th October and be uploaded to the system by the 14th October.

When entering your digital images please put the category name followed by a hyphen and then the title;

Beauty-Title
People-Title
Culture-Title

There is no restriction on the number of images per member or category, however, the total maximum per club is 10.

Where the image title is not preceded by the category, the adjudicators will place that image into the appropriate category.

The Tulip Competition will only accept Digital Images, please follow the normal login process and ignore any reference to Prints.

Rosanna Photographic Club

Vale  Jack Lanagan   12/9/1930 – 28/7/2016

Jack Lanagan was born in northern NSW.  After studying engineering in Newcastle, he married Ann in 1953, and together they spent a number of years living in Britain and around Toronto in Canada.  Jack and Ann then returned to the Newcastle area before moving to Melbourne in the early 1970's.

Jack had a life-long passion for photography which he shared with Ann. After moving to Melbourne, he joined the Rosanna Photographic Club in 1973 and at various times was also a member of the Ivanhoe and Melbourne Clubs and the Royal Photographic Society. He was the convener of the local RPS group.

Jack was always quick to move into new technology. When Cibachrome printing arrived, Jack was one of the first in Melbourne to take up the new process. Using his engineering skills Jack built his own automated
Cibachrome print processor. Solutions entered the print processing drum via valves and electronic timers. Jack generously shared his accumulated knowledge with his fellow club members. For many years the Rosanna club was known as the "Cibachrome Club" as so many members followed Jack in taking up this process. The combination of
artist with the camera and master printmaker was undeniable in competition. Jack's name features more than any other on Rosanna's print aggregate trophy. Jack's photographs also gained national and international awards.

When digital photography arrived, Jack was the first member from Rosanna to shift to the new technology. Even before the digital cameras were sufficiently good for club members, Jack had invested in one of the best slide scanners available, scanned his slides and reprocessed the digital information using early versions of Photoshop. He quickly moved onto a digital camera and became an expert user of the Photoshop program. Just a few years ago, Jack found a shoebox full of 6x6 cm negatives taken during their time living in Britain but which had never been printed previously. Jack quickly scanned these negatives looking to find any hidden gems, leading to a wondrous image of Bruges appearing in our competition.

Jack was a man of few words, a quiet gentleman who didn't need to talk up his abilities.  His photographs spoke for themselves.

Jack will be fondly remembered for his quiet good humor, his gentle nature, his stunningly high-quality photography and his willingness to share his knowledge with other photographers.

Judges and Presenters at your Club
Every year, when we put our syllabus together, we turn to the "Victorian Judges List" to engage judges and presenters for our monthly meetings.

These people are members of the photographic community that volunteer their time to come along to our meetings. In the past, there has been very little training for potential judges and no continuing training at all for existing judges. A group has been formed to try and rectify this.

The APJA (Judges Association) has put together a series of 1-day seminars to help current judges and potential judges become better trained and be of greater help to clubs.

As current judges retire, one thing is for certain, if we don't train up new judges, it will be increasingly difficult to engage judges and speakers. Also, there will be little or no improvement in judging standards if there is no ongoing training.

Please support this initiative. If you would like to attend the next round of Level 1 training the details are below. There is no compulsion to become a judge. It is an excellent opportunity to increase your "Image Evaluation" skills.
