Cavendish Red Gum Festival Photography Exhibition/Competition

I am on the organising committee for the Inaugural Cavendish Red Gum Festival. Cavendish is a small town in the Southern Grampians Shire. As part of our festival we are holding a photography exhibition/competition. It would be fantastic if you could forward on or share the following information.
Thank you.

Merryn Coughlin
CRGF Arts Committee
The Cavendish Red Gum Festival 13th & 14th April 2018
"A community initiative celebrating the magnificent red gum country of Cavendish and surrounds. The event will include activities for everyone; young, old and families- kicking off with the official launch, our Red Gum Festival Opening Gala. Other highlights will be the" Red Gum Run (or Ramble)"  a 4.5km run/walk along the majestic Wannon River and an environmental symposium with guest speakers and displays.
We invite sculptors, artists and photographers of all ages to celebrate our red gums by entering works in various exhibitions and competitions.
Through visits and tours to significant local red gums in conjunction with live music, food, beverages, workshops, children's activities and various red gum vendors (honey, art, craft, furniture and other artisanal works) visitors to the festival will be able to enjoy, explore and learn about our unique local environment."

FIAP World Cup for Clubs

Dear Peter,

FIAP World Cup for Clubs
FIAP have just released the information and entry form for their World Cup for Clubs event for 2017. This is an event in which any camera club can participate. It is essentially a massive world wide interclub competition.
Whilst APS itself, being the Operational member for FIAP in Australia, cannot participate in this, APS members are able to enter by organising their local camera club to enter as a team. It is not a requirement to be a member of APS or for the club to be a FIAP member to be able to take part.
The FIAP website is not being currently kept up to date as a new website is being developed. In the absence of being able to provide a link to the relevant page of the FIAP website, the three documents associated with this event have been made available in the FIAP area of the APS website.
Please head to this page for all information regarding involvement with FIAP associated events
http://www.a-p-s.org.au/index.php/about-fiap
See the section there regarding this competition and follow the link for "Other FIAP Documentation" to download the entry information.
We have lots of highly successful clubs in Australia with groups entering international salons. So gather your team and have a go at this event. Time is tight with the digital upload of entries due by 10th Nov. The entry consists of 20 images with a max of 2 per person. Both club and individual awards are up for grabs.
Best of luck to those who take up this challenge. I hope to publicise any successes of our APS members and their local photography club in this event in our E-News.
Bronwen Casey
FIAP Liaison Officer

Message from the Newsbrief Editor
Spring has sprung ... etc etc. I feel better already. A walk along the beach at Shoreham with my camera and friend got me going. What are you doing to celebrate Spring?

A visit to the Ballarat International Foto Biennale was worth it. There were some very interesting open-air postings of photographs and the main exhibition of David LaChapelle's work is visually stunning and mentally challenging/thought-provoking. I am very glad I made the trip. There is still time for a visit.

The Annual General Meeting for VAPS has had to be changed to 19th Nov 2017. Please note the change from the previous notified date.

I have been pondering over the balance between, time spent doing basic processing of my images and the time I spend doing excessive processing. I am always tempted to go crazy with processing and I have to remind myself to pull back and think it through again.
We get new tools that allow us to do new things in amazing ways and "off we go". It is only when our understanding of the tools has matured that we begin to think critically about what we do, and say, "Well, was it worth it?" I think we did the same thing when we got access to a word processor with all its fancy fonts. "Off we went!" using nearly a new font for every word. We thought that is was fantastic. Then, as our thoughts "matured", we realised that we forgot that it was the message that was important and not the bells and whistles. I now go right back to either a simple sans serif font for headings and serifs for the body of text. I do hear that sans serif fonts are easier to read on a screen though.

The same thing happened when we got access to video technology and slideshows. Put in a different transition between every slide as fast as we could. The slideshow became one of transitions rather than one where the content is the important thing. I don't think we have got over that one yet. Do you see many slideshows where the transitions are the surprise rather than the content?

I watched the judging of the landscapes for AIPP/APPA awards (Australian Institute on Professional Photograph - Australian Professional Photography Awards). They were streamed live on the internet. Drone photography was quite obviously playing a part. Drones are a new tool that allows us a way of viewing things differently. It will be interesting to see what direction it takes as our understanding matures. Will it enhance the message or be a gimmick?

We all get much out of photography and participating in the activities of our clubs. We also enjoy extending that network of friends when we have inter-club competitions and visit clubs for judging. Give some serious thought to putting back "a little something". Nominate for the VAPS committee. Meet new people and have your input on the ways VAPS can support the affiliated clubs. Committee meetings are held on a Sundays, when appropriate, throughout the year. The nomination forms are below.

Pakenham Camera Club
Ballarat Camera Club
Ballarat Camera Club
The original Ballarat C.C. was formed c. 1893. The early records are
essentially lost but it seems that the early club had an interest in
astronomical photography. Lantern slides for astronomical photography were used back in those days.

The club survived in the early days to become a member of the Victorian
Photographical Federation but was not a founding member. The club was still quite active in 1908, as reported by the Australian Photographic Journal. The club ceased to exist in c.1918.

After a hiatus of about 20 years, the club reformed in early 1938. The club met monthly from 1938 to the mid-1940s, but, due to a shortage of materials because of WW2, it went into recess until 1947. After the war, a public meeting was held at the Ballarat YMCA. The club was reformed again, with the name Ballarat Photographic Society, but this soon reverted to the Ballarat Camera Club and by 1949 there were 22 members.

In 1952, colour slides were introduced into club competitions. VAPS
formed in this year also, and two members of the B.C.C. were elected to the VAPS committee, these being Harry McConnell and Herb Richmond. In March 1953, the club held the very successful Ballarat Begonia Festival Photographic Exhibition. Many had never seen a photographic exhibition before.

In March 1960, the club formed a movie group. In 1968, the club held the first of its national print-only exhibitions, known then as the "Ballarat National Photographic Exhibition". This competition is still going and is now quite famous in the photographic community.

Over the years, the club has had many moves. Through participating in monthly digital club meetings, judging nights, workshops and outings, members can learn new skills and understandings, such as how to operate their camera, understand light, process images on the computer, and so on.
