 President's Report. June 2016
Greetings to all,
First, let me say that our recent VAPS convention held in Albury this year was one of the best yet. For those of you that attended and enjoyed the excellent programme and availed yourselves of all the other activities that were available, I am sure you would agree with me wholeheartedly. The Wodonga-Albury camera club and its members are to be congratulated on a wonderfully run and extremely well-organized event. For those of you who missed out this year, we have planning in place for the next two years and we hope to make an announcement soon. Make plans now to attend and enjoy the events and social gatherings that take place at these conventions.
Coming up soon in our photographic calendar is an event I hope many of you will think about. We have been approached as an organization by Tesselaar's Tulip festival. They want to run a photographic competition open to all members of clubs affiliated with VAPS. They are offering a substantial discount off the $26.00 entry fee, simply by printing and submitting this form (enclosed in this issue and will also be in the August issue of News-brief) which you then take to the festival and present on arrival.
Please pay careful attention on how to enter this competition and follow all the instructions, which are set out in this issue!
I encourage as many as possible to enter this competition, not only to avail yourselves of a great day out and photograph the event, but also to maybe win some cash and maybe a cash prize for your club too.
The festival runs for about four weeks, giving us all a very flexible timetable to get there and enjoy an excellent day out, maybe with our families and our camera's of course.
Until next month, enjoy a real winter season here in Victoria for a change, with your camera, maybe even chasing some snow photography!

First of all, an Error in June Newsbrief.
June 2016 Newsbrief was indicated as Vol. 44 instead of Vol 43.
Thanks to Paul Palcsek for the keen eye. A corrected version is on the VAPS website.
Well, I have recovered from the VAPS Convention. It was very pleasing to meet new people. The youngest delegate attending was Jayde Burnett from Berwick Viewfinders Camera Club. Jayde is a Year 11 student. When you think of the changes we have experienced in photography since the introduction of digital I wonder what people of Jayde's age will be experiencing when they are my age. The mind boggles. Good luck to Jayde with photography. In fact, good luck to us all.
In this edition, you will find a link to the Catalogue for the July Convention. It can be downloaded and saved from there.

 MORE FROM THE CONVENTION HOST DESK.
- Winner of the WACC convention raffle was Vicki Cain of Howlong.
- Many thanks to those who have taken the time to forward your comments which are still filtering in. To view all aspects of the convention from the inside can become blurred as excuses can so easily be taken into account hence your comments are important for accurate future planning.
- The convention dinner "surprise entertainment " did not go according to plan. It was one area I left to outside sources. Whilst the entertainer was a very talented singer/guitarist I was seeking a more "dynamic" performer for this particular occasion.
- Our models from the photo shoot have received some images....thank you on their behalf.....however with the number of images taken I am sure a few more would be appreciated. Please forward c/- of myself at 360 Indiana Court, Lavington. NSW. 2641.
- It's now time to put the "for sale" sign on my desk and chair however I will retain the inward tray for any further correspondence.

Attention All Camera Clubs
TULIPS DOWN UNDER COMPETITION - INSTRUCTIONS
VAPS has partnered with Tesselaar Tulip Farm to bring
you an exciting digital competition, see the flyer in this Newsbrief for the details.
This will be a Club entry, not individual members. Members will need to lodge their best digital images taken at the Tulip Festival during 8th September and 4th October with their clubs, and clubs will need to select the top 10 entries.
Clubs will then need to load their digital entries up to the VAPS Competition website, vapscomp.org.au, just as you did for the Interclub.
If your Competition Steward has lost the current club login to the VAPS system or you need a new one please request a new password or use the Contacts tab to contact us.
Digital images for the competition must have been taken between 8th September and 4th October and be uploaded to the system by the 14th October.
When entering your digital images please put the category name followed by a hyphen and then the title;
Beauty-Title
People-Title
Culture-Title
There is no restriction on the number of images per member or category, however, the total maximum per club is 10.
Where the image title is not preceded by the category the adjudicators will place that image into the appropriate category.
The Tulip Competition will only accept Digital Images, please follow the normal login process and ignore any reference to Prints.

11th Skipton Photographic Show Report
The 11th Skipton Photographic Show was held on Sunday 22nd May. We had approximately 100 people attend and 775 photos entered. This year youth entries were split into Primary school and Secondary school with the Primary section being well supported. The high standard of entries from previous years was maintained with some outstanding photography on display across all sections. It was great to see some locals entering and winning too. Congratulations to all winners and place getters. First prize for each category was $10, Section Winners $30, Champion Print $50. Both Youth Encouragement Awards $25 as were the Packer's Prize and the President's Award.
The major results were:
- The Champion Print of the Show: "Hopetoun Falls" - Judith Armstrong
- Best of Open Section: "Weather Alert" - Lyn McConnell
- Best of Novice Section: "Hopetoun Falls" - Judith Armstrong
- Best of Youth Primary Section: "Red Lauren" - Nicholas Bodman
- Best of Youth Secondary Section: "Fantastic Master Fox" - Genevieve Chapman
- Youth Primary Encouragement Award: "Snug as a Duck" - Holly Draffin
- Youth Secondary Encouragement Award: "Yada Yada" - Ruby Rieth
- Packer's Prize: "White Plumed Honeyeater" - John Higgins
- President's Award: "Tulip Girl" - Julie Eaton

What a wonderful weekend we had in Albury this year and congratulations to Brian Paatsch and his team. From the organisation, interclub presentation, meals, program and location, the weekend was outstanding and went far too quickly. While the weather controller could not be found all weekend, it meant lots of warm time indoors listening to wonderful presentations about aerial photography (and awesome abstract imagery), macro images of slime mould destroying fungi (you have to be there to understand how amazing this time lapse imagery was), rock and rollers of the past and sublime images of landscapes that we can only dream of capturing.
I managed to venture outdoors for an early morning street walk. The grey skies invited black and white conversions and the coffee along the way was a warm and welcome interlude.
I look forward to next year's convention...

You do not need to be an active judge to be a member.
The prime objective of the Association is to help develop the evaluation and judging skills of members.

A Brief History:
Camera clubs have existed in Melbourne since the 1890's and an umbrella organisation called the Victorian Photographic Affiliation was formed in 1908. This guided amateur photography in Victoria for forty years. The Victorian Association of Photographic Societies was formed on 27 September 1952 and comprised of 12 clubs. This has grown to more than 70 clubs in Jan 2016. VAPS is a non-profit association that is entirely self-funded. The Association is run by an elected Committee of Management which is responsible for the operations of the Association, and for ensuring the Association fulfils the objectives.
