General meeting of the Yea Camera Club held 9^th. May @ 7.00pm in the RSL hall

In the absence of the President, and Vice President , John steered the meeting.

The RSL has invited the camera club to attend a familiarisation session with Jenny Keast  on the use of a Defibrillator. The available dates and times, and contact details were read out to the members. ( Probably now the only available time slots will be Thursday 17 May.) The meeting confirmed that they did not want to run a competition this year. Ann Anstey will inform Lisa Cornwall that we do not have a requirement for Beaufort Manor.The club will consider running the competition bi annually.

Ron Litjens addressed the meeting to request that club members send photos of wildlife from within the Wetlands, to him for the Wetlands facebook page.His contact detail is

The meeting was a practical portrait session to practise for the Yea Identity Portrait project.

Ann Anstey organised models – Michelle Dolman and daughters , Natasha and Teagan, and Brian Ward. They were very patient and understanding. The meeting warmly thanked them.

President Ann announced that the Capture an Idea subject for next month presentation is  INSECT.

Next month’s talk will be on Light Painting with David Norris. David is well known to some members and will give a fun and practical presentation.

The weekly photography exploration of the wetland’s wildlife is continuing . Meet on a Tuesday at 10.00am in the main carpark on the East side of the river.

Phil Glowacki gave a presentation on” Phil’s Tips.” The starting point for wildlife and landscape photography-
a) Aperture f6 – f9.
b) ISO 640 – 800
c) Exposure Compensation – minus 1 or 2 clicks. Avoids blown out sections of any photo which would be hard to recover in post production.
d) Pre focus – you don’t have the time to focus on the spot.
e) USE Silent Mode.
f) Focus on the eye.
g) Make sure the dioptre setting on the camera’s viewfinder is set to the user’s eye characteristics.
h) Consider the depth of field when setting the f.stop.
Phil’s kit is a lens 70 – 300mm f5.6 and another Macro 100mm f2.8

There was a slide presentation showing the difference shutter speed can make and panning the camera.

A further tip for simple creation of Panoramas – use Microsoft ICE programme – it’s free!
Joy Clayton won the last month’s Capture an Idea – TIP. Runner up Alan Cole

The Potts and Glowacki team and set up  a fish tank with backdrop. Using a tube Ann managed to blow a stream of bubbles in the water for the members to photograph. 

Similarly Phil had set up a bowl filled with coloured water and into which drops were delivered into the centre, creating an effect on contact and a series of concentric waves. The team is to be congratulated and thanked for their efforts in running the practicals and set up.

Last month’s homework was screened- bursting water filled balloons. There were some intriguing entries. Also the effects of changing white balance were shown. Most members chose extremes, so that the pairing were usually  1 blue tone and 1 gold tone.

The fifteen digital entries entered into the VAPS Interclub competition were screened. The fifteen prints for the VAPS competition have been delivered to the Zommers courtesy Alan Cole. The digital images have been uploaded to the competition website.

Homework for next month: -

Feb meeting

Hi all

Welcome to 2018 and our monthly programme that Andrew Potts has worked hard to put together.

Our first meeting for the year will be NEXT Wednesday the 14th. at 7.00pm in the RSL.

We have a fun and learn evening planned. First up is Photography of a balloon bursting, filled with water. So bring your camera and maybe a tripod.

Obviously this is an outdoor activity and will be weather dependant. Those who did it last time had a lot of fun and can mentor the first timers.

When we have calmed down, Alan Cole will present another episode of "Back to Basics."

Some members have recently photographed the cycle races. I suggest that each send their two best shots to Alan Cole so that we can admire their skills.

Bring your print for " Capture an Idea"  - TRIANGLE/S

Interclub competition. Please bring your two highest scoring prints from our November display, excluding any print that might have been exhibited in the 2017 Interclub.. If you didn't display in November, then please bring two prints that you consider your best efforts. A team of judges will have to be appointed and print and projected images decided by March 18th.

2018 Annual Yea Photography Competition. Are we having one? The membership MUST decide bearing in mind that additional help outside the committee will be required.

2018 Photography Project – Portrait of a Yea identity. Members should submit names of identities, so that each selected person is only approached once by one member,

Peter Carty presented on Architecture.  20 questions answered on the how and why of architectural photography, followed by a power point presentation of examples.

Next month’s meeting will feature Projector Portraits. Please send to Alan Cole images that you feel would be suitable for projection onto a model.

John and Joy gave an update on preparations for the Spring Show. Sponsorship's were on track and prizes for the raffle were coming in. It is hoped to give out raffle tickets to sell at the next meeting. Thanks to the energy of the committee members and Pauline for the raffle.

The next meeting in August will also include the AGM. The current committee will meet on 2^nd August to review the year’s performance. Meet at Kerry’s house 7:00pm

Last meeting we took photographs of OBJECTS as preparation for our Folio piece of the same category. Please email your OBJECT photograph to Alan Cole by Monday evening.

A reminder that as we start a new financial year, our annual membership fee becomes due.

Also it is time to give thought if you would like to be more involved in the running of the club. The annual general meeting will be held Aug./Sept at which time all positions are vacated and open for election.

Camera Club reminder

Kerry handed out a proposed schedule for our outing to the city on Sat 29^th April. A very full day to be adjusted as the day develops. Meet at RSL at 8.00am.

John and Phil won the senior sections of the UGLN photography competition.

Paul Robinson gave a presentation on Long Exposure and Blur.

Long Exposure. Night time photography – no tripod ( use any firm construction as a support) very high ISO – X000 and large aperture and short time exposure. No flash – use available commercial lighting.

For moon photos – max aperture ISO 800  30 sec.

Blur – Paul showed examples of blurring techniques, using camera movement and zoom while shutter open.

Paul cold judged the Shadows prints for Capture an Idea.

Peter Dunphy gave a presentation on Professional Landscape Photography. He illustrated a series of guidelines:

Structures and Templates.

The Hogarth  S

Liveliness v Diagonals

Divide the picture into 4 and have something interesting in each.

Vanishing point for lines. Strong lines can disappear outside the shot.

Front and Centre

Compositional Thirds

Tonality  Focus   Colour

A good professional knows what the shot is before picking up the camera. Location research is 90% of the job. See everything before you shoot anything. It’s all about the light – golden 20 minutes!

Camera gear – Outstanding optics and good sensor plus a tripod.

Folio piece

This year, this concept will replace our homework. Over the year the aim is to produce six pieces of our very best work which can be entered into our Melbourne Cup competition, be displayed in our January display and also be ready for the assessment process for the VAPS Inter Club competition. 

The monthly topics will be aligned as far as possible with the monthly presentations. Your submission can be a print presented at the next meeting or a digital sent to Alan Cole and the concept is that it will then be positively reviewed by the members present. Hopefully suggestions will enable you to improve the image so that the final result is as good as you can make it.

This month’s topics are Landscape or Flora/fauna.

Ann Potts reported on the visit to the Blue Lotus Farm outing.

VAPS Convention in Monash Uni Frankston. May 25/26/27 Our Interclub entries and those of the other clubs will be on display. Members must register to attend, and can attend Friday night, Saturday, Sunday, Monday or all days according to their wish. Visit the VAPS web site for details

Kerry announced that as a result of a pre poll of members, the club will run a competition and display over the Melbourne Cup weekend.

A call was made for interested members to join the committee to organise and Ann Anstey, Ann and Andrew Potts, and Phil Glowacki and  Gidget Knight volunteered. Joy and John Clayton will steer the committee.

Ballarat International.19/20 August This weekend in August coincides with AFL in Ballarat and interested members were advised to book their accommodation ASAP.

Photo judging. As previously announced on the night, the Peer winner for February “Rounds” was Ann Anstey and Phil Glowacki. The judge’s choice was Kerry Gouldthorpe, with Highly Commended Joy and merit Ann A.

Michael alerted members to a Photo Exhibition at the NGV from now until August.

Kerry asked for volunteers to photograph the Harvest Festival next Wednesday 10.30 – 2.00pm. Ann Potts and Michael volunteered.

Next meeting of the midweek clubbers will be Tuesday 14^th @ 9.30 meeting at Cummins Reserve.

1.                   Kerry introduced Desli – “The Photographer’s Toolbox.”

She and her brother bought the business approx. 2 yrs. ago. They have a retail presence off Canterbury Road at Southfork Drive. They specialise in Products / Gifts, but also backdrops (6m x 3m) stands and lights. Club members receive a discount.

2.                   Camera Club Outing to the Lotus Farm Saturday 18th Feb. Meet 9.30 am at the RSL or 11.00 am at the Lotus Farm.

3.                   Capture an Idea “ Circle/s/Round” There was a tie for 1st. place between # 18 and # 12. “Capture an Idea “ for March is Industry/Machinery.

4.                   Ann Potts/Joy Clayton/Alan Cole/Phil Glowacki will judge the submissions for the VAPS Interclub tomorrow Thursday 9th.

5.                   Ann Potts announced the first meeting of the midweek club, and it will meet on Tuesday 14th in the Y Water Discovery Centre car park at 9.30am. Note this car park is over the bridge on the left when heading to Alex.

6.                   Alan Cole made a terrific presentation on FOCUS.

7.                   He illustrated some of the science behind obtaining a focus and the differences between manual and auto focus, and the sub categories in auto. Some of the specifics were a bit difficult because of the range of camera manufacturers and models. Not all members had all the attributes mentioned because they had different cameras, but Alan made it instructional to all and finished with a practical exercise. Many thanks to Alan

Feb 2017 meeting

The first meeting for the 2017 New Year will be Wednesday 8th February at 7.00pm in the RSL hall.

This is one of the most important meetings of the year because it is the opportunity to inform members and obtain feed back on the year's activities. Listed below in no particular order are some of the items to be brought up at the meeting.

1. Guest presenter Desli   - "The Photographer's Toolbox"

2. Presentation by Alan Cole in his Back to Basics series, this time on "Focus"

3. Canvas interest in the planned outing Sat.18th Feb to the Blue Lotus Farm. (Perfect venue for your Folio piece on Flora.)

4. Review our Display over the Australia weekend

5. Information on entering/in house judging of photos for the VAPS INTERCLUB COMPETITION. If you have photos that you would like to be considered ,and were not in the last display, please bring them on this night.

6. Camera Club"s Competition and Exhibition over the Melbourne Cup weekend. Who wants it and is prepared to take a role.

7. Capture an Idea – present your photo of Circle/s/Round.

Restatement of Rules for Capture an Idea.

There are two competitions using the one photo running concurrently within this framework – one to be judged by our Peers and one to be judged by an external judge.

A) The Peer Choice.

To be eligible to enter in any month, the member must be present.

The members will vote for a first place only. Do not vote for your own photo.The winner on the night will the member with the most 1st places .The result is totally independent of the number of voters.Monthly result could be announced on the night.  Results will be accumulated to the year end and the winner will be the member with the most 1st places. In the event of a tie, the winner will be the member with additionally the most 2nd places.

B) External Judged Choice

The same photo judged by our peers will be externally judged. In addition, members unable to be present on the night may enter their photo.

The judge will announce a winner and highly commended/ merit as they see fit. The scoring will be 4 points for winning, 3 points for HC , 2 points for merit and 1 point for entering. Points will accrue to the year end and the winner will be the member with the highest score.

General rules

1. Entrants must be a financial member to enter the competition.

2. Photos must have been taken during the year of the competition.

3. Digital alteration and editing is allowed.

4. Subject matter must be acceptable to be viewed by minors.

5. Each photo should have your unique number ( available from Ann Anstey ) in the bottom right hand corner.

6. Photos must have been taken by the member.

Jenni Tanner was introduced and presented on the post camera production of Black and White photographs. This technique has far more processing options than “in Camera” processing. She outlined several Photoshop techniques and her preferred option of “solid colour adjustment layer”. Jenni also listed the attributes that contribute to a good black and white photograph.  It was interesting to learn that all her B & W photos start as Raw colour photos because of the greater level of data in colour compared to in camera B & W.

Whittlesea Show

Alan Cole offered to take member photos to the Whittlesea Show.

Gap photos from last month’s Capture an idea were not available so judging results were not announced. Next month’s subject is DOOR/S .

The outing to Healesville Sanctuary is a week on  Sunday, the 23^rd October. Cost is $24.90 for Pensioners and $29.30 for seniors. Meet at the entry at 10.30am . Lunch at your cost.

Please let me know if you are coming so that we can wait for you at the gate.

It seems that now is holiday season. I have received several apologies for tomorrow's meeting.

We have a guest presenter – Jenni Tanner- and we would really like a good turnout of members to make her effort and travel worthwhile. If it is possible, please come and enjoy the evening with your fellow members.

Vicky gave a presentation on judging criteria and what makes a good photograph a competition winner.

Alan Cole was congratulated on winning the Flowerdale Competition.

The outing to Healesville sanctuary was confirmed for October 23rd, and Ann Anstey would invite other clubs to join us. If we have a group, we may be able to arrange a group discount on entry.

Ann Anstey has arranged for Peter Kewley to address the November meeting on the requirements for entry into the VAPS Interclub competition and also the role of VAPS.

Judy Hoffman  has offered to take  a group on night photography and star trails August 30th meet at the RSL at 7.00pm.  Event subject to the weather and will be confirmed nearer the night.

Meeting opened at 8.30pm with attendance as for the general meeting.

There was no general business from the minutes.

President’s Report
Kerry reviewed the activities of the club over the past year and thanked the committee for their support, especially Ann Anstey for her organisation of the programme and Alan Cole for his work in the annual show and his monthly projection skills. Alan and Michael Minter were also thanked for their photography with the Yea Arts Carnivale for which the club received a donation from the Carnivale committee.
Acceptance moved by Gidget Knight  Seconded  Judy Hoffman      Approved.

Treasurer’s Report
The financial records for the 2015 Show and for the 2015/16 year were presented to the membership. The Treasurer made a comment that Expenses exceeded income and that a successful show was important financially to the club, and/or other funding activities would be required to support the current style of operation.

Written nominations have been received from Ann Anstey and Ann Potts and a nomination from the floor was received from Andrew Potts.

Motion : That the membership fees for 2016/17 remain at the current membership rates.

Wolf Marx, a member of the Australian Photography Judges Association from the Camberwell Camera Club gave a presentation on STREET PHOTOGRAPHY.

Here are the notes on his presentation.

Definition of Street Photography. – random activities in public places. Usually features people in chance encounters, un- manipulated and unaware. There should be GRACE.

Australian Law – no one has the right not to be photographed in a public place. Use commonsense and discretion.

Tips for better photographs

1. Look for interesting locations and wait for interesting passers by
2.  Go to political rallies, protests and public events.
3. Try to avoid harsh light.
4. Use small cameras for discrete shots.
5. Use auto focus or hyperfocul length. There is an app for this “Set my Camera.”
6. Use shutter priority 150/200th second.
7. Prowl the streets.

Members are reminded that subscriptions for 2016/17 are now payable ( by direct debit or on pay to AnnA on the night of a meeting).

Next meeting will include the Annual General Meeting, at which all executive positions will be declared vacant. Nominations are requested to fill these functions – President, Vice President, Secretary , Treasurer and at least one non executive position .
