Message from the President
FROM THE PRESIDENT     FEBRUARY 2017

Greetings everyone,
I hope that we all had a safe holiday break and have started the new year in a positive way. It's always a good time to relax and catch up with friends and family. Some of us might even have had time to sort through those folders of images we took in 2016 and now have them all catalogued and safely archived!
This year we need to mark up on our calendars a few important events.
Firstly, keep in mind the upcoming 2017 VAPS convention and photographic interclub on the 27th and 28th May at the Monash University, Peninsula Campus.
Check the programme for all the good speakers and presentations. As its so close this year for the majority of club members, we should make every effort to attend.
Also, those of us who are considering doing one of the Judges seminars with the APJA this year, keep in mind that levels One Two and Three are being offered.
Check out too, the various Club and other organisational  Photographic competitions that are being offered this year. There is a comprehensive list on the VAPS website.
Later in the year, the Australian Photographic Society will hold its annual convention (APSCON) in the beautiful seaside location of Forster in Northern NSW. More details of this and the programme highlights can be found on the APS website for those that are interested in attending.
We are never short of events and things to do as photographers, and we will get so much more out of our passion the more we participate and involve ourselves in those events.
Enjoy your photography, all the best.

Ian Rolfe
President VAPS

Message from the Newsbrief Editor
2017 is here with heat and storms around Victoria. What fun. The Convention 2017 is on its way. Keep an eye on the Newsbriefs and the VAPS Website for updates and information.

Over the holidays I have had an opportunity to explore new image processing software that is emerging. I guess most of us use Lightroom and Photoshop and have worked out the way they work best for our interests, needs, skills and motivation. Luminar, Affinity Photo, Aurora HDR, and ON1 Raw have been further developed recently. It has been interesting to see if any of them suit my way of doing things or are there new ways of doing things. It is stunning to see what the software engineers are doing these days. We forget about them a bit and think that all the developments are in hardware. I have been jolted into new ways of thinking and am learning a lot. The more you learn, the more you realise there is still more to learn. Roll on 2017 with new horizons and even a few good sunsets.

I note that APSCON 2017 is at Foster (NSW) 18-22 Oct 2017.

Reflecting on how you get your copy of the VAPS Newsbrief. Building up to the VAPS Convention in May it's important that as many people get access to the information contained in the Newsbrief. There are several ways you can get access.
(a) By it being forwarded to you, as a member of an affiliated club/society, from your club/society secretary (or contact person)
(b) By your direct subscription. You can subscribe on the VAPS website or via links in the Newsbrief.
(c) By accessing it from the News Section on the VAPS website.
If you are the secretary of a club/society, are you forwarding it to your members?

Food Photography. I came across a short video on lighting food photography. I learnt a lot even when not thinking of wonderful food. It's sharing time. Video here.

Do you have difficulty reading on the screen? One of the advantages of delivering the Newsbrief in a web-browser is that you can use the browser's controls to zoom in and make the type larger. Don't forget that you can do that. Just make sure you use the instruction in the email to read it in a browser. Look for the zoom command in the browser's menu bar.

VAPS Presenters

Tom Putt - Convention Presenter

Tom Putt is a passionate and wildly enthusiastic landscape photographer, having spent the last 20 years exploring all parts of Australia to photograph. Tom says, I first fell in love with photography at age 13. I photographed wildlife, following my love for ornithology, before leaving university to pursue a career in sports photography.

In 1998, I was fortunate enough to take the eye of Australia's leading sports photography agency, Sport the Library. From 1998 to 2001, I covered over 300 events across Australia and the world, including the Sydney 2000 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

But my passion has always been in landscape photography. My first shoot was walking the Overland Track in 1997. Since then, I have travelled extensively across Australia pursuing landscape photography.

Now Tom engages in another exciting medium, Drone and Aerial photography, his keynote address on Saturday morning, 27th May will astound and excite you as Tom takes us to the skies for some unforgettable aerial landscape photography.

Don't miss this special and fantastic opening to your 2017 convention programme, we know Tom will delight and enthral us all with his stories and photography.

You can find more about Tom and his photography workshops at

ULTIMATE TRAVEL & CREATIVE WORKSHOP

1. Saturday Workshop
Title – THE ULTIMATE TRAVEL & CREATIVE WORKSHOP
Meet father and son team Darran and Pearce Leal for a unique workshop that will take you beyond point and shoot travel photos and offer you thought to provoke challenges to improve or adjust your photo interests. They will cover techniques, locations and offer you quality question time. Stunning example images will include locations in Antarctica, South America, Africa, Arctic and other locations around the world. Darran has over 300 articles published and is a current regular contributor to Australian Photography Magazine. Pearce has already been published in several magazines and self-published two books. The father and son team will also cover film, polaroid and of course a diverse range of digital subjects, linked to shooting and using your images.

"Travel photography is not about the simple act of visiting a location and taking photos. Rather it is about immersing yourself in the locations culture, landscapes and nature. Then to be creative, you need to open your mind and steer away from point and shoot images, challenging yourself to explore old and new concepts."       Darran & Pearce

Join Darran and Pearce as they take you around the world in 90 minutes!

2. Sunday Keynote Address
Title – WHERE IS PHOTOGRAPHY LEADING YOU?
Our Keynote Speakers are two of the most travelled photographers in the world. They meet a diverse range of cultures, explore amazing places and shoot with hundreds of photographers from all over the world each year. You can expect some funny stories, points to test your photographic interests and be amazed at the limitless options available to you today as a creative artist. It does not matter whether you are a beginner or a seasoned veteran, the same problems and opportunities apply. This motivating speech will touch on a very important question – Where is Photography Leading you?

Tell your friends these will be two special presentations not to be missed.
